Thursday Doors, 11/10/18: Apulia and Basilicata

The witches of Apulia go door hunting.

My mother has three friends who like to call themselves witches and like to go on tours. They are all around 70 and when my mom was 70, these friends gifted her a basket of tangerines and a trip to pick tangerines by the Neretva river in Croatia. For example.

This year two weeks ago, just about when Joey hosted Thursday Doors and talked about our little tribe and how everybody is gifting us door pictures, the witches toured the south of Italy: Apulia, or Puglia how Italians call it, and Basilicata with amazing Matera that must be the farthest place on my to-go list. It would take me six hours.

Witches in Matera (plus one witch in training).

Mother returned in high spirits, eager to add more towns to my list, such as Altamura, Otranto and Trani, only complained a little about the multitude of churches and lack of sea which they were only able to observe from above, and then proclaimed that they had been having plenty of door fun and I would see the results soon.

First, the most recently added witch, second from the right in the photo above, was kind enough to share with me the garden gate from her home in Slovenia. The birds on the left and right are of her own making. If I were passing this door, I’d take photos of it most gladly. Thank you!

And then I got a hefty email with the proper door treasure-chest, as you shall see right now.

All of the photos below were taken by the Blonde Witch (they named themselves after the colour of their hair), the first on the right in the above photo. Thank you very much, Ditka, and to all of you for splendid door-spotting. For this post I’m using every single door you’ve sent!

And the featured photo above – that one I wish I’d have taken it myself, which I don’t say often or lightly.

Welcome to Puglia! (Ok, and Matera which is in Basilicata.)

And of course, welcome back, Norm! It was great having you over but it’s good that you take the wheel again and lead our strangest tribe through many new doors. (Since I’m travelling tomorrow I’m too early for the blue frog. Will add my post there when I arrive.)

    1. Thank you so much, Norm. I was thinking of asking you to do this (but wasn’t sure if you can). And I can see your many sunny Italian doors from the place I haven’t visited yet. You certainly choose your destinations well. 🙂

  1. As if you don’t have enough door treasures around you, more are sent to you! This ‘tribe of witches’ is wonderful and I love that they are now including a ‘witch in training’ 🙂

I love the shooting star above the first door and of course the 2 door-in-a-doors. Italians certainly do doors very well 🙂

  2. How wonderful to have a coven of Witches send you the loveliest of lovely doors! My favorite is the aged Bronze door at the Trani Cathedral with its beautiful patina, and that Matura green door.

They sure do know how to do doors in Italy!

The garden gate in Slovenia with the guards is quite lovely too.

  3. Haha the two birds by the gate and the two dogs above the door are excellent additions to some already wonderful doors!
But I’m finding it hard to believe all the “witches” are around 70 years old (e.g. your mum looks a lot younger!) Must be some witchcraft going on 😉
And I wonder what the kids are like if they attend a preschool with a door like that…!

    1. Hihi, true about witchcraft! You know what they say, we are the granddaughters of the witches they were unable to burn. 🙂 Thanks, Pistachios! And I was wondering the same about that preschool! 😮

  4. What BEAUTIFUL gifts! So nice! These are some of the best I’ve seen and oh the stature of some of these — just amazing! The featured photo’s absolutely my favorite, quite the composition, pleases my eyes, especially in color! 🙂

    1. Thank you, Tatiana. Welcome to my blog. This particular post contains photos from a friend of my mother but I post my own door photos every Thursday and many other photos most of the other days. 🙂
