Flowers for grandma

And one dog. And one cat. You would be closing in on 100.

Happy birthday, Baca!

What reminds me of you the most?

Burda. Kiwi. Blackcurrant. Cottage cheese. Umag. Opera, especially Madame Butterfly. Love of Italy. Beautiful Vida, a poem in many languages. Your stories of three sisters, of which you were the middle.

How you celebrated good blood sugar test results for your diabetes by having a cake.

How you described scampi to me, moving your little finger to mimic one.

How you played cards nightly with my grandpa for Pounds Sterling. How you held hands on that photo from the island Hvar in Croatia where you did your summering.

How you ended up in the same hospital room as the grandma of my first crush. I shouldn’t have told you all that, who knows what all you two talked about! Nah. It was good. This way we could both come and visit you together.

Your daughter has just been here with her first husband, as she likes to joke. And your son will come too, after Morocco and Turkey, and that was just in the last couple of months, and take me and bestia to Slovenia.

And now look at all these flowers and colours! They are just for you. Cin cin!

    1. Thank you, Joanne. Simple things, yes. That’s why it pays to pay attention to them. These snails cluster so often on the wire and other surfaces around here for no apparent reason (apparent to me, that is).

    1. Ahh, thank you, Lexi! 🙂 They are from the last couple of days. So happy-looking! And don’t we just miss them on and on? That quote about us being the result of the love of thousands keeps springing to mind.

  1. Oh that’s lovely. I think that’s so sweet. I love the fourth paragraph most, because my grandmother loved cottage cheese, too. I think we were the only ones in our family who did.

    1. Thank you, Joey. The truth is I still don’t like cottage cheese. 😉 But she was sooo adorable, making desserts from recipes in German “Burda” magazine (for homemakers with fashion and clothes patterns and food) that I often had some just to please her. And she sew too and I had to model sometimes.

  2. What a lovely Birthday Tribute and post to your Grandma. I never knew my Grandparents on either side.
On Father’s side they died when he was young, and on Mom’s side her Dad died when she was 3, and my Grandmother died when I was 13 weeks old.

I know I missed something special.

I love the lavender and poppy fields!

    1. Thank you, Deborah. Ahh, sorry to hear about your grandparent situation. And only now I realise that they indeed have the colour of lavender but actually are just some wildflowers. Maybe that’s why I like it so much. 🙂
