After an eventful and pleasant birthday visit from my parents, we are back to basics. And I’ve been left with doors aplenty.ย
We visited some towns that were especially rich door-wise, but this will come later.ย Today a mix of churches, restaurants, elephant doors, animal gates and an update on the beach house situation.
And a rainbow. It all started with a rainbow that was following me as I was driving towards Orvieto to pick up my parents at the train station. I’ll make a special post about it soon, today just one door with it.
Towards Orvieto.
My state of mind: if it’s a door or a gate – even if in the rear-view mirror – I need to click.
From right: A lion, a basset, a fish, a black rooster on the bell, a couple of swans, a Dalmatian dog, a tiger, a Siamese cat and I think a duck hiding in the tree.

First elephant door.
Second elephant door. They are neighbours in Tarquinia.
This Beat 75 restaurant on Via Pakistan where Via Slovenia starts remained untested. We came between working hours. Grosseto likes its streets named after countries.
Father went in and witnessed quirky decoration. I’m sorry I stayed out.
We did try out this gelateria in Grosseto. We found it solely due to modern electronics. It’s not all bad. (Photo: BM)

And here is the renovated beach house which I showed already some weeks ago. Quite pretty with the vines and all.
To end with a couple of modern churches. This one is on the marine side of Tarquinia.
Impressed more with the red carpet cycling lane.
I took this photo five years ago in Grosseto. It was a random find. Looking almost like a mosque.
Father took this one now. We went to find it on purpose. Not far from Via Slovenia.
This was on the first day and it was pouring.

Excellent for waiting out (some of) the rain.
The Church of the Holy Family. Only then we noticed the address: Not Via Jugoslavia any more but rather The Soviet Union Street…
Hahaha Iโm glad you showed a close-up of the fish. I was having trouble seeing it clearly in the first photo!
This makes me want to go there and find the Australia street! I hope there is one!
Excellent doors as always, of course, and the one in the rear view mirror was quite sneaky ๐
Thank you, Pistachios. I just had a look and there is Via Australia indeed. Via Switzerland and New Zealand are the neighbours. You’ve got a sports field and a cinema. ๐
Those modern churches are actually not bad. I’ve seen some around here that are totally hideous.
My fave door is the last one with the 2 missing side panels. Hopefully they can fix that properly because it sure is a lovely door ๐
That red gate is cheerful! And my the church in Tarquina has much of the church buildings in California! Are red bike lanes new for Italy? How lovely your parents were able to come and visit for your birthday:):)
Thank you, Jesh. Red bike lanes are indeed not a usual sight around here. We had them in Slovenia though (probably still). It was really lovely. I told them that next time they should come for two weeks, not just one, because it goes by too fast.
I thing red for the bike lanes is an excellent idea – hard to ignore! It’s a wow these days when adult children rather have their parents 2 weeks than one, visiting – you are blessed!
This is quite a departure from your normal features of very old buildings and doors. I quite like that church – but then again, I am a fan of rounded architectural features. This one is quite unusual and not the normal collection of straight lines and corners.
Speaking of very unusual, I also really like the gate with all the animals. What the ….? Glad you tossed in a photo of the little fish too ๐
Thank you, Joanne! ๐ Yes, I like the last church as well, probably due to its roundness, but the one before with the red bicycle lane doesn’t do much for me. Interesting what you point out: indeed I rarely post much modern stuff. No secret as to where my eyes prefer to rest. I stopped by that animal gate not because of all the animals (most of which I only spotted at home, fish included), but because next to this house a bunch of goats were feasting on the grass among the poppies. Will post one day.
