Thursday Doors, 22/3/18: Men’s Doors

After two Thursday Doors posts full of doors for women, with one more coming up next Thursday, here is one for men.

Only one, you’ll say, discrimination! But please, first, excuse this gender segregation the last few Thursdays, it was not planned. This is just my way of saying thank you to certain people. I could also divide you into right- and left-handers. I love both equally.

And second, after having spent more of my free time with men than with women ever since the basketball playing days, including living with two male bestias for the last five years, now I can see that women bloggers pull me in much more than men. I notice that women comment and reply to comments more often than men and are often more approachable.

(But these are not nearly all fine blogging men who I’ve been following forever or just started. I said it before and I say it again: I follow too many blogs. There are just so many great ones and I can’t mention all. Sorry!)

About half of the saluted men do not blog but have convinced me in other life-supporting ways. Here are your doors, with gratitude.

“Who is this?” bestia is asking. “He is the only one who can make me stop pulling.” I know, bestia. Finally! Another uncle on his only visit in Capalbio when bestia was still crazy.

This happy gathering of seniors is for my two grandfathers who might not be willing to sit down like this and would prefer to play a game of chess. I never knew which one won more often. (Grosseto)

My friend, who gave me this Therapy? bag, is sorely missed. He is able to get me out, and chat. I have his records and his bowl, though, and more. (Spot the most unnecessary door in the world.)

This Piran library door and window are for my book- and Piran-loving friend. We used to hitchhike there, eat mussels, drink wine, and sleep on the beach. (Once. It was cold.) We don’t any more but now I translate his poems.

It can be only one: The grandest door in the whole of Italy (of Florence Cathedral) is for the WP door master who gave us all another thing to pay attention to. Hail, hail!

This door maker and (photo) taker can see here how much he can save if he makes this by himself. Because he would. Note the pup head: he knows – never mind the doors, the pup takes the crown every time. (Rome)

This is cheating because even though this Roselle door is for one blogger, the blog is not only his, they are three now. The youngest can’t type yet, I assume. They show us mostly Portugal but they’ve been around the world. And he cycles to places so that we don’t have to. I can imagine him seeing this and stopping to take this photo.

Not that Dante was much of a comedian dell’arte, but this door reminded me of my theatrically-minded friend. If he buys a castello as he has hinted, we can be neighbours, almost. This door is from Trastevere in Rome though.

He was here not long ago. Even though he is from around here, he sounds nothing like it. The way he writes could make the world go round and in a way it does. (San Galgano Abbey)

This is for another great world-hopping and Irish-loving writer. I can imagine him chancing upon this church in San Martino sul Fiora and writing about it so that I’d wish to see it for myself.

She heard that I knew you and implored me to ask you to write more often than once a year. She is waiting eagerly, see? As are hordes of your readers. If your country doesn’t let you, it’s time for a coup. (Siena)

I admire his photo skills and his humanity. It’s not possible to be a stranger to him, he is warm and funny (for a German! hihih), but that’s what we are, aren’t we? Urban strangers. (Castiglioncello)

Another excellent photographer of a Australian dragon variety, so much so that I fear dedicating a door to him. Not worthy! His Cuban series is especially noteworthy. And then he sometimes comes over and encourages me. Thank you! (Plečnik’s Church of St. Michael, Črna vas, Slovenia)

This is for a young man whom I don’t know much at all but enjoy reading immensely. He cycles, hitchhikes, hikes. Even though you cannot cycle into this street, Ljubljana and Slovenia will be happy to have him.

This church in Piran, Slovenia, looks more like something from around you. It is here to resurrect all the dogs. You write like it’s a long lost art, but not nearly lost for all.

This door from Izola, Slovenia, is for a fellow Buk fan who loves my doors and windows. It’s from the heart but it’s closed today. You can p(l)ay with Visa though.

And finally, for a mystery man with no blog in Britain’s best kept secret, Cornwall, who sometimes gifts me a door: “Google is watching you!” (Ljubljana)
